iPhone users FratelloWatches just became iProof..

Jul
08

Being an iPhone enthusiast myself (and I am not a gadget freak, I only want electronic stuff that works properly), I gave FratelloWatches a slight update so it works faster for iPhone/iPod Touch users. Thanks to WPTouch, creators of this great add-on software for my blog, this site now loads very fast on iPhones (and iPod Touch models).

Where you had to rescale the website before,A buyers guide for $2000 watches, as shown below, you now have a quick loading overview of the last articles I posted here on FW.

With the WPTouch add-on, the website now looks like a iPhone app from the AppStore:

You can tap the article you want to read, which gives you some sort of preview. If you like what you see, and want to read the full post, tap the ‘Read This Post’ line and voila..

Here’s the full post with images/photos included, rolex watch imitation, scaled down automatically for your iPhone/iPod Touch screen. If you prefer the regular website-view, scroll down and tap the Mobile Theme switcher.

For watchfreaks, there are some nice iPhone apps out there. Glycine released an iPhone application, displaying a fully working Glycine Airman 17, with the self-winding rotor that moves while you move the iPhone. Bell & Ross released an iPhone app as well,Copy watch, showing a few models from their collection and it gives you an overview of all world wide dealers. And then there is this lame application (at least I think it is), but see for yourself…

Audemars Piguet ROC 26300 - One Of My Favorite Watches Explained

Nov
23

Exactly one year ago,U-Boat Watches, rolex replica, I bought an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Chronograph (also nick named ‘ROC’) ref.26300 to accompany my precious Royal Oak ‘Jumbo’ ref.15202. I added the ROC because I missed the thicker bracelet and case of the Royal Oak ‘Date’ ref.15300 I previously owned.

The AP ROC has become one of my favorite watches and is always in my weekly watch rotating programme (something I learned to do from Chuck Maddox). The ‘Newman’ or ‘Panda’ dial combination has become a popular model amongst the Audemars Piguet ROC fan base, given the times this exact configuration pops-up at the ‘new watch’-threads at TimeZone’s Audemars Piguet forum.

The picture above was taken and posted by Luke (TrA), a regular visitor of TimeZone.

The owner of the wacth picture above,Watch copies, Luke, explains to the readers that although the watch only measures 39mm in diameter, it certainly wears a bit bigger. He writes: Its size and profile make it both elegant and sporty IMO. The red accents on the dial give it some drama and urgency (it is a chronograph after all!). Check the small report on his new watch here. He considered the Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph ‘Panda’ as well as the Royal Oak Offshore Diver (which we reviewed here).

A long term report on the Audemars Piguet ROC ref.26300ST will be up soon.

One Bag, Two Ways Nancy Gonzalez Large Crocodile Clutch

I can’t think of a bag that’s more versatile than a big black clutch. Add an exotic skin to the mix for a healthy dose of luxury and you’ve got a bag that can be worn day or night and year-round, no matter your age. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine how you’d work even the most basic bag into your wardrobe, however, particularly if you’re not prone toward considering a clutch (even an oversized one) to be a legitimate option for daytime use. With a little help from the Nancy Gonzalez Large Crocodile Clutch, I’m here to give you some food for thought. Or, maybe, I’m just here to make up pretty outfits. I’m comfortable with either of those options.

The Bag

The Nancy Gonzalez Large Crocodile Clutch: This should take very little explanation. Black is a hugely versatile color and an oversized clutch is a hugely useful shape to own. I for one don’t mind holding a clutch under my arm on most occasions (besides maybe shopping), and a bag like this is particularly appropriate for daytime events – an afternoon wedding, replica rolex submariner, for example. Of course, it looks equally chic after dark. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1850.

Day

Acne Shy Pleated Satin Tank: The key to wearing black accessories during the summer is making sure that you include bright color and light fabrics in your outfit. This magenta top looks super chic against nearly any skin tone and would easily be office-appropriate under your favorite cardigan or blazer. The twisted strap is a subtle-yet-modern detail. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $200.
Alice + Olivia Eric Pant: Is there anything more luxurious for summer than a pair of voluminous white linen trousers? I certainly can’t think of anything. Not only are they weather-appropriate for summer, but they make bright colors pop and can be worn in a variety of situations and settings, as long as the sun is shining. Buy through ShopBop for $253.
Philosophy di Alberta Ferretti High Heels Ankle Wrap Sandals: You can’t have a pair of flowing,The Be & D Barclay Tote goes camouflage, wide-leg pants without a proper pair of platforms to accent their shape. The wooden heel keeps the shoe summer-appropriate despite the black leather, which coordinates with the color of the clutch. These are the type of shoes that you’ll use over and over again with a thousand different outfits – they’re nearly as versatile as the featured bag. Buy through ShopBop for $620.
Lee Angel Etienne 18 Strand Necklace: I don’t care who you are, where you’re going, or what you’re wearing: a simple outfit needs statement jewelry. Unless you’re going crazy with patterns and texture, there’s not an ensemble that can’t be improved with some bling, this one included. Sure, the top and pants are very nice, but when you throw on an enormous, confident necklace like this one, the entire thing is taken to the next level. Buy through ShopBop for $155.
Alexis Bittar Large Lucite Bangle: This super modern bangle certain falls into the “statement jewelry” category, but it won’t take up as much visual space as a metal bracelet would, meaning that it won’t compete with the other giant piece of jewelry that I included in this outfit. Isn’t it nice when things work together? Buy through Bergdorf Goodman for $495.

Evening

La Petite S Asymmetric Jersey Dress: How I love this dress, let me count the way: it’s an unexpected yet gorgeous color that could work well on lots of skin colors, the asymmetrical draping is gorgeous, as is the dramatic jersey ruffle down the back, it’s long enough and cut high enough that a woman of almost any age could wear it. In short, I love it and would like to have one immediately, if not sooner. I will find an event for this dress. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1480.
Ranjana Khan Silk Petal & Bead Earrings: If you’re going to wear an asymmetrical neckline, please don’t wear a necklace that competes with or interrupts it. You’re screwing up the dress. Instead, take the opportunity to put your hair up and wear totally over-the-top earrings. They’ll attract attention up, making people more likely to notice not only your interesting neckline, but also your beautiful face. Buy through Saks for $390.
Fendi Cinderella Runway Platform Sandals: Hear me out on this whole lucite thing. I know that it makes some people think of stripper heels, but Fendi did it in such a pretty, feminine, ladylike way that I can’t help but totally adore it. They chose wisely to confine the lucite to the platform and make the heel out of a traditional material because the shoe strikes a perfect balance between pretty and sexy. In this case, the draping that makes up the body of the shoe is particularly appropriate because it reflects the structure of the dress. Buy through Saks for $1140.
Roberto Cavalli Swarovski Serpent Bracelet: The colors of this particular snake bracelet work really nicely with the green dress, but this is the sort of piece that could really go with anything: neutrals, wiss replica rolex, brights, patterns. Day, night, whatever. I wear my animal cuffs more than I wear anything in my jewelry collection, and people constantly ask me where they can get something similar. Well, here you go – spread the gospel far and wide, my children. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $675.

Marni Alpaca Tote

Normally I have a good amount of vitriol for fur bags. Not because I have lots of political opposition to them (although I don’t wear fur), but usually just because they’re pretty ugly. Puffy, shapeless and vulgar are normally words I would use to describe them.

But, for some reason, I’m having trouble coming up with my normal level of self-righteous rage over the Marni Alpaca Tote. It’s not that I like it, because I don’t think I do, but could it be that it’s just not quite as bad as the average fur bag, while still being substantially worse than the average non-fur bag?

Marni Alpaca Tote

I think that maybe my low-level of disdain for this bag is because not only does the fur have some interesting texture variation to it,rolex watch replica, but the bag actually appears to have a bit of a shape. Instead of being a uniformly colored and textured puffball, it actually looks rather bag-like. Which isn’t high praise under normal circumstances, but it probably puts it at the top of the fur bag rankings.

And maybe it’s because Marni is a brand that has a very quirky, breitling fakes, nontraditional style to it that I don’t hate that they made a fur bag. I’m not sure. I still wouldn’t wear it,Its like you read my mind, but I could imagine someone pulling it off reasonably well in a very cold climate. I’ve seen worse, that’s for sure. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $2440.

Real Housewives of New Jersey “Paris Hilton taught me that. Just pretend you’re on the phone. It

Last week, we predicted that this episode of Real Housewives of New Jersey was going to be crazy – the previews promised it! Sadly, it turns out that that Bravo was telling us mean, vicious lies – there was a lot of foreplay and no…well, you know. It was more complaining and name-calling without any sort of resolution, and I’m starting to tire of this whole thing very quickly.

We can only see these women eat at so many Italian restaurants, drink so many glasses of wine in each others kitchens, and attend so many parties in suburban banquet halls before the whole thing plunges into a hypnotically awful abyss of…wait, I guess we’re already there. Won’t you join us?

Again we started at an Italian restaurant, this time with Caroline and two of her sisters that aren’t Dina. They got to talking about Albie, naturally, and Caroline got a little emotional again and it was sad in an individual sense instead of a “sad for humanity” sense, which is almost unheard of on this show. Caroline has also come down with a touch of the Empty Nest Syndrome, which has to be hard when she defines herself so clearly as a mother. People being normal and having normal emotions – a rare thing in Housewives history!

Elsewhere, at an Italian restaurant in a parallel universe that was significantly heavier on the traditional Housewifery, Teresa and Jacqueline got together with Kim D. of the Bad Dye Job and talked about her drunken antics from the housewarming party. That lasted all of thirty seconds before they started complaining about Danielle, whom Kim D. has decided she doesn’t like today. Who knows about tomorrow, though! Kim D. is having a fashion show and inviting Danielle in spite of her momentary hatred, and she wanted Teresa and Jacqueline to show up too. Of course, because they’re wonderful people, they decided they should attend out of obligation to grace everyone with their presences. It was the nice thing to do!

Danielle, naturally, was not pleased that Kim D. had chosen to invite those people to an event that also required her attendence, because North Jersey is not big enough for the both of ‘em. Or the three of ‘em. Or how many housewives are we down to now? I can’t remember. Anyway, Danielle went to confront Kim D. at her store but ended up berating the random girl at the desk instead and later concluded that she should have solved all of it by giving her the finger. It’s a universal sign of “light and love” up north.

When Kim D. called her back minutes later, Danielle flipped out in the nonsensical way that can only be done by a tried-and-true crazyperson, and then a few minutes later she skidded into the parking lot in her Range Rover and stomped in to flip out in person. You know, just in case Kim D. hadn’t figured out how betrayed she felt because the shopgirl was on the phone when she walked in and didn’t fall at her feet to be of immediate assistance. She has a single, people. Can’t professional singers and probably-fake lesbians get some respect in this world? Danielle stomped out and swore to never spend any money in the store ever again, but since she just charged everything to a tab anyway, I’m not sure that would be any great loss.

Back at Chateau Manzo, Caroline was sad about her growing children and wanted her husband to retire so he’s around more to keep her company. She still has all three kids living in the house, so I’m not sure that her Empty Nest drama isn’t a tad premature. (Really, breitling watches, when is Chris going to move out? Never.) Her husband says that he’ll never quit working completely, and I believe him. Men like him never do, for better or for worse. Albert later took Caroline out for a nice dinner later and he promised to try and cut back a bit at work and take more time off. Getting a dose of real human emotions during this show is sort of like staring straight into the sun.

Again at Posche (it pains me to spell it like that), perhaps as a way to piss off Danielle even more, Kim D. asked Jacqueline’s daughter Ashley to walk in her fashion show. Shortly thereafter, rolexwatch, she called Danielle to patch things up and beg her to come to her fashion show, promising that there wouldn’t be any drama. (Ha.) Danielle rationalized her attendance at the party because the venue was in Wayne and no one would dare mess with her in the town in which she lives. Apparently there’s some sort of invisible fencing that keeps the Manzos out, which is weird since I’ve never noticed them wearing censor collars.

Recognizing that the fashion show would obviously cause problems, Teresa and Jacqueline consulted with the all-knowing, all-seeing Caroline in order to decide what to do when forced (sort of) to face Danielle. Caroline advised them to have her thrown out if there was any sort of problem, because if they do nothing, the terrorists win. Hey, I just had a thought – perhaps Danielle is Osama Bin Laden in drag? Someone call the CIA, I’ve figured this whole thing out. It’s all so clear now, we’ve been wasting our time searching in Afghanistan.

When it was finally the night of Kim D.’s fashion show, watch rolex replica, everyone showed up in their Range Rovers of various colors and my favorite part of the entire thing was that Teresa was wearing the grey fur jacket that she was eyeing in the last episode. I feel ya, Teresa – when I buy something, I have to wear it immediately too. Real talk.

I couldn’t enjoy it for too long, however, because Kim G. and Danielle showed up (late, with a body guard and driver) and then the drama started. Danielle was scowling and pouting as always, looking for her friends at other tables like a teenager nervously clutching her lunch tray in the high school cafeteria. When Danielle found out that Kim D. had invited both Teresa and Jacqueline to sit at her table, it set off whatever Rube Goldberg machine is inside Danielle’s head, and she decided that Kim needed to be “exposed.” For what, I don’t know. Neither do you. They didn’t tell us.

The fashion show started and all the models had been painted a Snookie-level shade of orange, just as I had hoped. In fact, one of them might have actually been Snookie. She had a poof and everything. While all of this wonderful campiness was going on, Danielle chose to pretend to make phone calls and act disinterested, a move which she claims Paris Hilton taught her. Never before did it seem possible that Paris Hilton would be embarrassed to be associated with anyone, but I doubt that even she would stoop that low. Relative to Danielle, she actually seems kind of classy. I mean, her sex tape was filmed in night vision, which is way cooler than anything Danielle had in hers. Or so I hear.

Around that time, Teresa noticed that Danielle was trying to incinerate their table with her mind and notified Ashley of the perceived attack. Kim G. and Jacqueline tried to calm everyone down and diffuse the situation, but these women cannot be diffused as we all well know at this point. Danielle got up to go to the bathroom and Teresa and Ashley, in their infinite subtlety, disappeared around the same time. Jacqueline found Teresa sitting in a chair outside of the ladies’ room, waiting for Danielle to walk out so that they could start an argument. Danielle actually appeared to not take the bait for a second, but then again, has Danielle every met any bait that she didn’t like?

Of course not. With Kim G’s accompaniment, Teresa tried to talk to Danielle about her daughter’s fashion show appearance and, well, you saw the previews. And that’s all we saw, too – we saw the “Don’t call me honey” line from all the commercials, but that’s where it ended. We’ll have to tune in on July 12 to see the weave-ripping, property-damaging good time that followed.

Linde Werdelin SpidoLite II - Unexpected Successor Of The LW Flagship

Oct,swiss rolex replica
30

Linde Werdelin SpidoLite

I’m pretty comfortable stating that the SpidoLite has always been the flagship watch of Linde Werdelin’s collection, although the term flagship isn’t used by watch brands – except for Longines – any more. With the first SpidoLite, Linde Werdelin has put themselves definitely on the horological map and it is probably the most recognized model from their collection. Last year, LW announced the coming of their first chronograph (we covered it here) and has recently started delivering them to their network of dealers. Based on the same complex case construction of that SpidoSpeed, LW now introduces the new SpidoLite, adding a clean and simple ‘II’ to its name for easy identification.

To make things a bit easier for you, I’ve put the two together. On the right side, the first SpidoLite (SA edition) and on the left side, swiss watch, the SpidoLite II. At first glance, nothing drastically changed and the cool design has been kept in tact. The new SpidoLite II does feature a small second hand on 9 o’clock instead of a centralized second hand and the ‘Linde Werdelin’ wording moved from 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock.

Although the comparison picture above shows more or less the same dimensions, the SpidoLite II shrunk a bit. Where-as the original SpidoLite measured 46 (w) x 49 (l) x 12 (h) mm, the new SpidoLite II measures 44 (w) x 46 (l) x 15 (h) mm. A tad bit thicker, but small nevertheless. Perhaps its thickness has something to do with the new case construction (similar to the one of the SpidoSpeed) or its new inner works, based on Valérien Jaquet’s Concepto Mechanical Automatic (calibre 2251) movement.

Where as some brands make the new versions of existing watches smoother, LW’s SpidoLite II keeps it raw and industrial with their titanium case. The SpidoLite II will become available in both titanium and titanium anthracite DLC versions, restricted to 100 pieces each. The first batch will be referred to as their A-series, just like we’ve seen with their SpidoSpeed and brands like Panerai and Audemars Piguet. In the future, it will be easy to refer to certain productions runs and years using this system.

Although the SpidoLite II has been enhanced with a new movement and case construction, the price stays more or less similar to the SpidoLite SA (Svend Andersen edition). 9930 Euro for the Titanium Anthracite DLC version and 9360 Euro for the SpidoLite II Titanium version, including VAT.

More details can be found at www.lindewerdelin.com. If you want to know more about Linde Werdelin’s founders and ideas, read the interview I did with Jorn Werdelin for AskMen earlier this year. Click here.

Speedmaster Professional 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Reviewed

Dec,wholesale high quality leather custom handbags

Alon Ben-Joseph of AceJewelers.com – friend of the show – did a very nice video review on last year’s introduced Omega Speedmaster Professional 40th Anniversary Limited Edition.

I love this version of the Omega Speedmaster Professional. The logo on the dial and special case back make it worth buying over most other limited edition Speedmaster Professional models. I have seriously considered buying this watch after it was presented during Baselworld 2009, but since I have had a few of these Speedies and cherishing my Speedmaster Professional pre-Moon caliber 321 the most anyway, rolex watch replica, I went for something completely different

Enjoy the video and don’t forget to give some feedback on it!

Photo Essay The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classique

Dec

With the exception of the newly released Reverso Ultra Thin Tribute to 1931, the Classique is perhaps in many ways the quintessential Reverso: it’s been in JLC’s catalog for many, watch buy, many years; it can be appreciated by both men and women (the size is a nice in-between that makes it a largish ladies watch but a slim mens’ dress watch) and is powered by a hand-wound caliber 846.

It’s also perhaps the closest thing we have to the original size, too. The bracelet is very flexible and comfortable for all wrist sizes; highly recommended over the strap if you have small wrists. (Fratello Tip: If you have very small wrists like my wife, you can make the extra links into a ring, see below.)

Interestingly, despite the long production run and affordable entry price – it’s one of JLC’s cheapest models – it’s not a very common piece on the secondary market. This says two things: one, people buy them to wear and keep, and two, Reverso owners are probably pretty passionate about their watches. I wonder how many have chosen to engrave something on the blank case back?

Enjoy the images; clicking will bring you to a larger version, rolex explorer replica, as usual. MT

Ocean7 LM5 Review - The World's Most Beautiful Diver

Nov
30

To be honest, until recently Ocean7 wasn’t brand that had watch models that I could mention from the top of my head, except for the LM-7. The Ocean7 LM-7 has probably been the watch model that people will know this brand for, it is a homage to dive watch watches of the 1970s according to the official Ocean7 website. People will immediately recognize the LM-7 being a homage to the famous OMEGA Seamaster Plo-Prof of course. To be honest, Ocean7 did a pretty good job in creating an alternative for the vintage OMEGA Seamaster Plo-prof. This was in the period before OMEGA re-introduced their own homage to this watch a few years ago with their new in-house caliber 8500 movement.

Anyway, Ocean7 is a brand that I’d like to call an ‘internet community’ watch brand. There are more brands like this, like Sinn, Tutima, Xetum and a lot of others. It is a brand that is being carried on the hands of watch connoisseurs who are active on forums and blogs and like to attend watch meetings to discuss their favorite watches. The largest watch community website, Watchuseek, has the official Ocean7 forum and owners and prospect buyers are showing their love and enthusiasm for this brand.

I got the opportunity to review the LM-5 dive watch by Ocean7, one of their more recent models and Ocean7 even claims it to be the world’s most beautiful diver. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there isn’t much you can’t like about this particular model. It reminds us about one of the high-end diving timepieces by Blancpain, the Fifty Fathoms, which is indeed one of the most beautiful divers in the world according to many. Ocean7 is actually being quite honest about their styling cues used for their watches, hence this LM-5 design and the design of the earlier mentioned LM-7 Plo-Prof.

One of the things that the official Ocean7 website doesn’t say, but what I want to mention here, is that this proofs again that a nice and “good quality” watch doesn’t need to be that expensive. A lot of people have other priorities for their saving money but do want to own a quality timepiece. In my opinion, Ocean7 jumped into this market with quality mechanical watches for a decent price.

On to the watch review. First of all, I would like to note that I am not a talented photographer like my colleague Ming Thein is. The sapphire crystal and the high polished watch case makes this a beautiful timepiece, but very difficult to photograph without all the reflections in the dial and case, as you can see below.

As you can see, the watch has quite some detail. The bezel with large luminous Arabic numerals has a sapphire crystal inlay really stands out. The corresponding numerals on the glossy black dial makes it a very readable watch. There is only Ocean7 wording on the dial, no other referrals to the model type, type of movement that has been used or the water resistance level. Only the stainless steel case back reveals the make and model of this watch, replica rolex watch, together with the fact that it is water resistant to 200 meters / 20 atm. The dial has a small date aperture between 4 and 5 o’clock, Ocean7 luckily used a black date wheel to have the whole date feature blend in perfectly with the rest of the watch.

The watch comes with either a 3D carbon leather strap, a stainless steel mesh bracelet (+ $199.- USD) or both (+ $269.- USD). The leather strap is referred to as 3D carbon because of the structure of the strap. It happens to be a very soft and comfortable strap, but I think I would prefer either the mesh bracelet or a black alligator strap. I know, very undive-ish, but I think I would like the look of it. The strap comes with a solid working double deployant clasp, also known as the ‘Cartier’-clasp or butterfly-clasp. It works very simple but effective, first you close one side of the clasp, then the second part and press till it clicks. Secured. The clasp is being released again by pressing the two buttons.

Ocean7 paid a lot attention to the details of this watch, as you can see on the picture above regarding the winding crown. The crown is easy to grasp and has been finished with the engraving of the company’s O7 logo. The diving bezel is unidirectional, like a bezel of a diver’s watch should be of course. The bezel is easy to operate, a tad bit heavy to turn but with firm clicks. There is almost no play in the bezel, which is giving me a comfortable feeling about the quality of the mechanism.

All-in-all, the LM-5 an attractive no nonsense watch that gives value for money and makes me hungry to learn more about that big fat LM-7 Plo-prof model they have in their collection as well. For only $899.- USD, the LM-5 is honestly priced and even with the optional choices like the mesh bracelet and COSC certified movement (+ $399.- USD) this watch is still far cheaper than a lot of other diving watches of similar quality. Personally, I would skip the COSC movement and go for the mesh bracelet option instead.

Although I am not sure what type of movement’s in side the COSC model, this model has the ETA 2824-2 movement. Like a diesel engine that has been seen in a lot of other watch brands as well, including Longines, Breitling and so on. Mind you, that the finish of this ETA movement probably differs from the ETA movement used in the more expensive brands.

Aren’t their any cons? Of course, there are some. Like I already mentioned, the one-side anti-reflective coating makes it a bit shiny in combination with the glossy dial. On the other hand, the only time this bothered me was when I was trying to take pictures of the watch. I also am not a fan of these type of straps, vintage rolex watch, but that’s a matter of taste in my opinion.

One of the things I didn’t mention yet, is the domed sapphire crystal of which the surface is below the sapphire bezel. This means that if you put the watch on its top (i.e. on the bezel), the crystal doesn’t touch the surface of the desk or table you put it on and won’t scratch or damage (although I know sapphire is hard to scratch, it’s the idea that I like).

Specifications:

Swiss Made Polished Steel Case Swiss Automatic Movement 42 mm diameter 13mm height Swiss Super-LumiNova Dial Markers and Hands Domed Sapphire Crystal With Inside Anti-Reflective Coating Domed Sapphire Bezel Insert, Fully Illuminated Water Resistance – 20atm/600ft 22mm Lug Spacing Screw Down Crown Unidirectional 120 Click Bezel 3D Carbon Leather Pattern Sport Strap with Double Deployant Pushbutton Release Buckle Optional German Matching Mesh Milanaise Bracelet with engraved OCEAN7 Logo Optional COSC Chronometer Grade Movement

Peter Speake-Marin Piccadilly Diamond Skulls - Hands On

Aug
15

There is horology, and there is art. And sometimes there is both. The first popular culture reference to skulls in recent times can probably be traced to Damien Hirst and his diamond-covered skull; I was struck by a sense of déjà-vu when viewing this watch for the first time. But there actually was not one, but two diamond-covered skulls. I have to admit, leather handbags offers, this watch was making me feel a little uncomfortable. We’ll come back to this in a minute.

Dial aside, the rest of the watch is classic Peter Speake-Marin: a chunky 950 platinum Piccadilly case with thick, straight lugs terminating in oversized screwed bars; aviator crown; vertically sided caseband. All in platinum, of course – as befitting a piece unique. Aside from the hands, the initial aesthetic of the watch is one of being visually ‘light’ – thanks to the various textures and reflective surfaces on the upper portions of the watch.

The only counterpoint to this are the oversized blued hands, which are beautifully finished and curve gracefully, complimenting the organic lines of the skull. It’s actually a good thing that the rest of the dial is light and reflective, as this only serves to further highlight the beautiful shade of blue of the hands. Another nice touch is the antireflective coating on the crystal; I can’t imagine the watch without it given the dial contents!

Personally, I think the real treasure lies around the back. Flip the watch over, and one’s first impression is that the German silver movement plates have also been covered in diamonds – fortunately, that is not the case. Instead, they are completely covered in elegant swirls – the effect somehow brings to mind a mad Lange engraver who has gone to town on not only the balance cock, but the entire movement.

Powering the Diamond Skulls is Speake-Marin’s SM2 handwind movement; there is nothing complicated about the layout or mechanics, but it is beautifully executed. The arcing bridges are a nice change from the conventional, too. There are a lot of nice details on this movement: the enormous barrel jewel that looks like an eye; the cutout for the great wheel; a beautiful swanneck regulator; separate name-plate-bridge, and a rather unusual barrel click design. This results in some strange winding feedback – it’s smooth but has a little resistance and tooth to it.

Finishing, of course, is absolutely first class all over. Even examining the components under 40-50x magnification, surface polish, hublot big bang, cleanliness, edge evenness etc are all clean and uniform. This is most impressive indeed. If this watch were mine, I’d get Speake-Marin to case it upside down, or at least wear it that way.

Back to the skulls. I’m done photographing the movement; when I flip it over, the heads are no longer jarring but somehow sad and happy at the same time; maybe it’s the angle of their tilt and the smiling tooth-line. And the polish of the eye-sockets reflects the underside of the blued hands in a liquid flowing pool of white gold.

You know something, I think the skulls are growing on me.

A big thanks to the generous collector for allowing me to photograph this piece.
